Yasuko To Kenji (2008)

A honestly hilarious comedy that touches on the bonds of siblings and love!

Matsuoka Masahiro plays a tough and ill mannered brother, Oki Kenji, who gets flared up at the tiniest issue. Having quit his gangly dealings long ago, he now works as a manga artist to make ends meet.

His greatest concern is his naive and adorable younger sister, Yasuko, played by Tabe Mikako who he is over protective of. To ensure her from going astray in her youthful age, he set harsh disciplinary rules for her such as tight curfews which only gets tighter, and not to keep phone numbers of guys. It is extremely funny to see how Matsuoka Masahiro carries out the character, which is almost entirely similar to seeing a manga character turned human.

Despite the exaggerated acting which I guess is the result of the actors trying to play as close as possible to the actual manga characters, Matsuoka Masahiro is simply amusing and lovable for his extremely hard and egoistic exterior with a soft heart. Much the same could be said for Ryoko Hirosue's role as Tsubaki Erika, the female bike gang leader whose love for Kenji has remained unrequited for many years.

The only issue i find was the repetitive arguing scenes between Kenji and Erika, which I think could be reduced to make some of the scenes less annoying. Also, this series has a clear episodic feeling with every episode resolved by a heroic rescue and fight at some warehouse, which can become quite predictable after a while. But overall, these are not really biting issues and somewhere from the middle of the series, the story takes a turn to reveal Kenji's inner emotions, his softer side when his position as a manga artist is threatened.

After following through to the 4th and 5th episodes, it increases my interest to watch on. As one of the staple gang leader-turned-good comedy, this is surely an entertaining one that would bring plenty of unexpected laughs to its audiences.

General Synopsis

TOKIO's Masahiro Matsuoka will star in a new NTV drama series called "Yasuko to Kenji." It is based on a comical manga by artist Aruko that was serialized in Bessatsu Margaret between April 2005 and November 2006.

The show focuses on a man named Kenji and his younger sister Yasuko, whose parents died in an accident 10 years earlier. Kenji was once the leader of a gang, but in order to support him and his sister, he began making a living as a shojo mangaka. His character normally wears glasses and appears to be a gentle guy, but he throws off his glasses and reverts to his violent side whenever he tries to protect Yasuko from danger. Part of the story follows Yasuko's romance with an intelligent and good-looking man named Jun Tsubaki. Jun's older sister Erika now runs a flower shop, but Erika was once a leader of a female gang, and she used to be in love with Kenji during those days. --Tokyograph

Mr Brain (2009)

An intelligent, funny and grandeous successor to Hero!

Accidentally found the link to this drama before its airing in Japan, I know J drama fans are in for a real treat from another detective series of Takuya Kimura, whose performance in his debut detective series' role Hero has left a deep impression in all J drama fans. The story starts with a jovial gigolo, who after a fatal accident resulting in great damage to his brain, wakens and lost all memories of his former self. This results in his brain opening access to its dormant functions which normal humans fail to utilize, thus highly raising his capabilities of the right brain and overall intelligence.

Unlike common comparisons like CSI and Galileo, this series explores the cases in an unique way, by incorporating the ideas of neuroscience in the investigation process to solve the mind bending cases. One main unique aspect of Mr Brain series goes to the mixture of supernatural and also superhuman ideas surrounding the cases. The fact that the eccentric and intelligent Mr Brain is willing to accept these so called illogical ideas create much comedic effect to the plot as he is doubted by his fellow colleagues.

Casting wise, this series includes a powerhouse of guests stars like Ryoko Hirisue, Gackt, Aibu Saki and many more. Japan is currently airing up till episode 6. Up till now, it is looking good and I can't wait for the rest of the episodes.

My Absolute Boyfriend (Zettai Kareshi) (2008)

A drama filled with absolute fun and tears! Absolute must-see for romance comedy lovers!!

When channel U first announced the airing of this drama, I didn't pay much attention to it, thinking it is probably just some normal teen love comedy just to promote some handsome blokes with a lame storyline. After my friend suggested to give it a try, I decided to watch it with my sis.

I admit that the unfamiliar casts did not help garner my interest at first, but the convincing and lovely acting of the down to earth Riiko, played by Aibu Saki, soon develop my liking for her, despite her being an ordinarily dressed girl accompanied with a quite silly hairstyle that ironically seems to suit her very well.

Her silly and lovable role is complimented well by the innocent and utterly devoted humanoid Night, played by Hayami Mokomichi whose sincerely amusing actions and presence hardly leaves her sight. Like Riiko, me and my sis as well, become attached to Night's character, and our wonder if his love for his owner, Riiko will ever come to fruition, and how hooked us to watch till the end.

While the initial episodes introduces mostly laughs and awkward situations between the unlikely couple, the later ones carry a more sentimental tone as Night's ego slowly awakened as his time and relationship spent with Riiko grew. More and more, we grew to love this drama for the sheer innocent love portrayed by Night towards Riiko, who at times seem to understand love more than the humans in the drama.

We love how the story evolved and eventually wrapped up in a beautiful and unforgettable closure. Surely, this is a drama of laughs and tears for those who have the heart to appreciate, even though it kind of lacked dramatic plot twists like some other more famous J dramas with a wider circle of characters, it is definitely a must-see for romance comedy lovers.

The special episode however was quite a let down, and sad to say, a rather redundant addition to the story. As most J drama fans would agree, specials oftenly fail to add on that extra depth to the story, and instead end up ruining the original series' good impression. In my opinion, I feel that special episodes work better only for series with isolated story arcs that changes with each episode e.g. Hero, Gokusen. But still, there are very few special episodes that do as well as the main series, and My Absolute Boyfriend's is one that falls short from its main series. The only conclusion I can draw for the need of a special episode is the idea that earning viewership ratings is more important than preserving a J drama's spirit...

Great Teacher Onizuka/GTO (1998)

A Life Altering Drama! GTO is simply a timeless classic of J Dramas!

About 9 years ago, my best friend lent this inspiring drama to me in VCD format. That time I wasn't much a fan of J drama, but I couldn't bear to reject his recommendation, so I decided to watch it with my sis as usual.

Little did I know that the couple of days that followed would be exceptionally fruitful and motivating. Seriously, every episode of GTO is nearly equally engaging the first time we watched it. Onizuka drives the show with his immense charisma and energy, joined by a solid storyline and soundtrack which is directed to maximum comedic effect and emotional level. Much of this drama's success is displayed through Takashi Sorimachi's good acting and the magic of the Japanese drama music industry.

It has been stated that Onizuka was the actor,Takashi Sorimachi's most favourite character among all the roles he has played. Though the drama adopts an episodic structure for the first half like many other J dramas, the characters' involvements are eventually tied in from halfway to the end of the main story, wrapping up nicely. I find this transition from episodic to continuous feel suitable and wise as it is less easy to get bored compared to watching the same characters' story arcs episode after episode, which can become draggy.

At the same time, it doesn't make you feel that the earlier episodes are of little or totally no relevance to the main story. It's not too draggy, not too episodic and the message is very clear and easily understood and agreed upon, executed through uniquely memorable scenes as Onizuka earns each student's respect by unconventional and moving ways.

The tunes of 'Poison Instrumental' and the 'Ballad For Fuyutsuki Asusa' are two unforgettable melodies played during many of the emotional scenes that few can ever forget. It is no wonder that the last episode is said to receive the highest viewership ratings in the history of J drama!

This drama lifts my spirits every time I watch it, and inspires me greatly to be as optimistic as Onizuka. Sounds really extreme but this is truly the work of its magic. Somehow Gokusen, as good in its own way, didn't have that a punch as hard as GTO. When this drama was aired in Japan, it was reported to have boost students' interest to go to school! Life altering or not, watch it to be your own judge! :D

General Synopsis

Onizuka Ekichi is the leader of a biker gang, who aspires to become a teacher. By chance, he gets to teach at a college, as the homeroom teacher for Class 2-4, where all previous teachers have either gone missing or been inflicted with nervous breakdown by its bunch of problematic students. With his unconventional teaching methods, Onizuka's firm passion gradually wins over the students' respect and trust as he imparts valuable life lessons rather than school work. Besides the students, he faces constant challenge from the school and educational authorities who oppose his teaching methods and doubt his ability as a teacher, for the fact that he is only a lowly graduate from some 3rd grade college.

Episode 1 Detailed Synopsis

The scene opens at an crowded outdoor swimming pool with sexy bikini ladies swimming and chatting under the sun. High up outside the building's windows stands a puzzled window cleaner, Onizuka, unpleased with his job. Seeing this, his colleague asked what he wants to be most in life, and Onizuka's answer is, a teacher. Instead of being supportive, his colleague laughs at his misfit ambition that seems unlikely with his punkish character.

A police officer arrives shortly after their conversation, asking for Onizuka. The officer is Saejima, Onizuka's close buddy, who tells him that a teacher had just tried to commit suicide and shows him a notice stating urgent need for a replacement teacher. Without much thought, Onizuka runs off for the interview, telling himself that this time, he is going to make it.

During the interview conducted by the unimpressed school's headmaster and supervisor looking through his resume, they go on to ask him the reason for being a teacher. Anxiously, he answers that his versed karate skills should be of much use when it comes to teaching difficult students. Hearing this, the headmaster declines his application straightaway as the supervisor mumbles sarcastic remarks about him. When asked to leave, Onizuka stares sternly at the headmaster, who goes on further to say that the school is no place for trash like him.

In rage, he shoots up from his seat, startling the two interviewers as he did, but leaves in disappointment with an apology. At the beverage counter tended by a friendly old lady who presumes he was rejected, Onizuka questions the views of teachers towards students nowadays, and says to her that he will never think his students as trash if he is a teacher. The old lady reacts bewildered at his words.

Just then, two rough looking students armed with bats rushed up the stairs towards the interview room. The old lady suggests that perhaps Onizuka should try to stop the students to turn the situation around. The students upstairs chase the frightened headmaster and supervisor who run frantically out the door. At the corridor, Onizuka interferes the pursuit, and introduces himself to the students that he is someone who shows respect for the headmaster. The students explain their rage at the headmaster's crude decision to expel them even after they apologize. But when the headmaster enforces that trash like them will never change, Onizuka grows stern and turns to give the headmaster a kick on his face. The onlooking students and the old lady look in surprise at Onizuka, who walks off with a pleased look.

That evening at the arcade, two male teenagers tried to intimidate the dispirited Onizuka at the arcade, only to be threatened by him instead. Onizuka commands them to sponsor him supplies at the convenience store. Onizuka finds Saejima back home, who is in the middle of watching porn video. Saejima reveals that someone came looking for Onizuka earlier and passed him a name card knowing he wasn't around. To Onizuka's surprise, the name card belongs to the director of the school where he was interviewed that very morning. Saejima conveys that the person promises to wait till 12 am if Onizuka is interested to be hired. With less than half an hour to spare, Onizuka hops on Saejima's police car and makes haste to the school, jumping over the closed gates.

Onizuka stops panting in front of the faculty office doors barely in time, and is received by a lady just when he thinks he is too late. The lady, Akira is pleased and introduces herself as the director, who happens to be the same lady who tended the school's beverage store. She accepts Onizuka's application, to his disbelief, saying that the school's problems lie not only with the students, but the teachers as well. Thus she needs a teacher with a stout character like him, and pleads for him to help her make the school better. For the first time, Onizuka hears someone else addresses him as 'Onizuka sensei' and is overjoyed. Yet the director only agrees to hire him on one condition...

The next day, the story introduces Fuyutsuki, a beautiful female teacher dragging herself up from bed as her alarm rings, showing great reluctance to start the new school day. At the school's gates, she runs into Onizuka who stares at her in fascination, giving her the impression of a pervert. She ignores him and hastens her way to school while Onizuka stops before the gate anxiously to prepare himself for his first day as a teacher. This he does by smoking and peering at passing female students' legs under their short skirts.

Much talk about a new unqualified teacher has spread around the teachers, and the headmaster tries to dissuade the director from her reckless decision, having ownself been kicked by him on the face. The director however insists to give him a chance, and let him takes on the most problematic class, 2-4.

Onizuka's arrival is treated with unwelcome and despise from the teachers, who do not even care to look a second glance at him. Fuyutsuki, under the headmaster's order, guides Onizuka with annoyance to his class. Once in, he writes his name on the blackboard, and turns to face the students, observing him in puzzlement and fascination. A friendly looking girl, Miyabi requests him for an introduction. Some of the girls comment on his good looks, while a girl Chikako teases another female student, Nanako that Onizuka fits her type of guys. At the back, Onizuka notices two male students who were the ones he met at the arcade. A male student Murai convinces Onizuka that the two, who apologize upfront with reluctance in their eyes are repentant for their actions. As he conducts his rollcall, Miyabi's friendly exterior melts away into a cold stare, as did Murai, scribbling wildly the words 'Kill Onizuka' on paper, and Kikuchi, the intellectual class leader, takes a sneak shot of Onizuka on camera.

After school, Onizuka finds Nanako, crying alone at one corner, saying that she doesn't want to go home. So Onizuka takes her to his place hoping to help her, unaware that it is a trap she sets with her two classmates who Onizuka met the arcade. At his place, she strips before the shocked Onizuka while her classmate shoots the moment she throws her arms around Onizuka's body. The guys threaten that his picture be made public if he doesn't pay up a certain sum by the next day. Before they leave, Onizuka asks Nanako whether her saying that she has a problem was purely an act from the start. Nanako hesitates and replies that even if she really does have a problem, why would she ever come to a teacher for help.

The three students gather at a cafe in celebration, but Nanako isn't in the mood and leaves curtly. As the two chases after her, they are stopped by Onizuka who brings them to a deserted road, where mean looking bikers appear and surround them. One of them reveals meanly Onizuka as their leader.

News of the the two students being dragged on bikes across the streets reach the school next day, with the headmaster bent on having Onizuka resign on the spot. With no choice, the director agrees and requests that Onizuka passes her his preprepared resignation letter which was the condition of his hire that should he break the school rules, he will resign on his own will. However, the teachers are taken aback when the two students speak in agreement with Onizuka's actions and request for him to stay, when in truth, they are acting under Onizuka's instructions in fear. Fuyutsuki realizes this after overhearing their conversation, and declares him as despicable.

On the other hand, Nanako grows interest in Onizuka as he is the first teacher to resist the students' notorious threats. She invites him to her big house, where Onizuka learns that she actually comes from a well to do family, though Nanako resents her parents' constant absence from home. Nanako decides to stay at Onizuka's place for the night, without telling her parents, who call up the school the next day to learn of her daughter's whereabouts. When the headmaster pressures Nanako to tell where she went the night before, Onizuka stands in to testify that she was at his place because she didn't want to go home. Despite the headmaster's order, she insists to stay at Onizuka's place.

During dinner which she prepares for Onizuka at his place, Nanako reveals how badly she misses the days when her house was smaller, and her parents were closer to each other. Now that her parents are rich, their relationship turn cold, they hardly talk and even sleep in separate rooms blocked by wall that seem inpenetrable. Hearing this, Onizuka tells her to leave, saying that she doesn't belong here. At once, Nanako throws down her apron and leaves in rage.

Wandering alone, Nanako encounters Fuyutsuki outside the arcade, who just received a call from her supervisor about Nanako parents' concern that their daughter has yet to return. Nanako asked Fuyutsuki about her opinions of Onizuka, which puzzled Fuyutsuki. She sent Nanako home, meanwhile followed by Nanako's two male classmates. At Nanako's house are the headmaster and her parents. When her parents ask why she did such an irresponsible thing for letting them worry, she simply says that they aren't fit to be her parents for realizing their daughters' disappearance only at such a late hour.

Furious at her answer, her parents blame each other, and eventually the school's mishandling for letting such an incident to happen. Fuyutsuki refuses to acknowledge this as the school's fault, until the cowardly headmaster presses her to do so and apologize for her attitude. Suddenly, Onizuka shows up with a sledge hammer in one hand before the startled group, yelling for Nanako who later runs out from her room upstairs. He asks Nanako 'Where is it?' The next scene shows a determined Onizuka storming into her father's room, stopping upon the wall. He slowly lifts the hammer and begins hammering. While Nanako's parents run to call the police, the headmaster goes after to stop them. Nanako watches on in silence moved to tears, along with Fuyutsuki and her two classmates who look on speechlessly while Onizuka hammers.

The smashed wall reveals a hole that leads to Nanako's mother's room. As Nanako peers from her mom's room, she breaks into a cheery smile. Onizuka tells her that the rest is up to her and walks off. The next day, he hands in his resignation letter to the director. When asked if he has any regrets, his answer is a no. Meanwhile Fuyutsuki and Nanako's two classmates' opinions of him begins to change. Nanako arrives in time to thank Onizuka as it was through that hole her parents saw each other's faces and smiled again for the first in a long time the night before. Nanako's parents then call saying they would lodge a complaint if the school fires Onizuka. The director gladly withdraws his resignation while the headmaster retreats in dismay.

Onizuka asks Fuyutsuki out for a date, who agrees to his rejoice. However, while passing by a commotion at the noticeboard, Fuyutsuki goes forward to check and sees a poster of a naked Onizuka posed in a S & M treatment with two ladies at his side. Stunned with disgust, she slaps Onizuka and runs off. Onizuka is no less shocked than Fuyutsuki to see such an obscene poster of himself.

Beach Boys(1997)

A very sentimental journey into the insights of life.

I caught this J drama Beach Boys about 4 months ago. Bought it online and finished it within just 3 days! Then I realized what the magic of this series is all about that first made it so famous a decade ago.

The Magic lies in the Characters, Theme and Settings!!

The Theme is quite a powerful one as it tells the lives of two strangers from the city taking a vacation to the peaceful beach to spend the summer. In truth, each of them are lost in life and somehow yearning for an answer. During their stay there at the inn, they gradually learn many things about life from both the hosts and guests of the inn. Initially strangers, both men soon become the best of friends as they learn much from each other.

Characters wise, all the main casts in this series really carry out their characters very well. This is especially true for
Takashi Sorimachi who plays the happy go lucky personality, Hiromi, who everyone at first finds annoying and unrespectable. His character is contrasted well by the reserved and responsibility-driven Kaito played by Takenouchi Yutaka. Ryoko Hirosue looks really adorable as Makoto, the young bubbly girl who has lived all her life by the peaceful beach with her grandpa, and hopes for things to stay that way forever.

Even before the 1st episode ended, me and my sis were so engrossed by the feel of the settings and the characters' relaxing lifestyles at the beach that we developed a sudden yearning to go to for a beach vacation too, like the one in the drama. No kidding!!

This drama is said to be one of the classic of J dramas, though it received generally mixed reviews. Reason for those who didn't like it is mainly due to the rather stagnant plot curve. Unlike some other J dramas, Beach Boys adopts a relaxing and realistic pace to tell the characters' life at the beach. I have hoped for more too initially, but once I got to know and love the characters and the voice of the story, it became my own vacation, and not just merely a drama experience.

That was why when it ended, my heart took quite some time to detach from the characters and the beach, just like how one would feel returning home from a memorable trip overseas. The songs and music like 'Forever' and 'Sing A Love Song For Me' everytime reminds me of this heartfelt journey and have stayed with me even till now. The title of this site J Drama Forever, is also inspired from the theme song's title.

This is definitely the drama for you if you are looking for a way to take your mind off the hectic modern city life, and immerse yourself in nature and the things that truly matter in life...

Theme:
  • A getaway from the hectic city life to the relaxing beach to reflect on what we want, to find our true 'ocean'(the life we want to live).

General Synopsis

Upon getting thrown out of his girlfriend Fujiko's apartment, Hiromi (Sorimachi) decides to head for the ocean. En route, he crosses paths with Kaito (Takenouchi), an elite employee of a large multinational trading company in Tokyo who is running away from his problems at work after losing a key client.

The two stumble into a quiet Minshuku inn on the beach run by the aging surfer Masaru and his high-school-aged granddaughter Makoto. Hiromi immediately applies to work there for the summer, and Kaito is forced to join him after he loses his wallet. The two share a room, with Hiromi trying to make friends, and Kaito at first resisting, unimpressed by Hiromi's devil-may-care attitude. Slowly over the ensuing episodes, Kaito becomes more and more at home in this sleepy rural town, and begins to wonder if he should give up his pursuit of success in the big city, and live a carefree life like Hiromi.

Also, the unlikely friendship between Hiromi and Kaito strengthens as they learn the precious things in life from each other and the inn's boss, Masaru as well as the various visitors who come to the inn, each with own unsolved problems in life.

Episode 1 Detailed Synopsis

The prologue shows a child from a tropical island writing a note, which she rolls up, slots into a glass bottle, and throws off into the sea.

The story then begins with Hiromi, the carefree and jovial freeloader being thrown out of his girlfriend's apartment for living off her without a goal or career in life. With nowhere to go and nothing to do, he decides to set out for a vacation to spend the coming summer.
Meanwhile, the story switches to Kaito Suzuki, a businessman working in a big company, who has just been taken off from a crucial company project due to his mistake. Unwilling to let his girlfriend, Sakura know about his job suspension, he plans to use a vacation as a good excuse to rest and think things through.

The scene then moves to Makoto, a bubbly and cheerful female student cycling back home after school. At the shore of her grandfather's minshuku inn, she discovers a glass bottle drifted ashore, but most of the note's writing are too smudged to be legible, apart from the last sentence which wrote 'God bless you. We are the beachboys.' She later pins the note up on her room's wall.

On his way to the far off beach, Kaito runs into Hiromi, whose car has broken down halfway. He drops off to help push his car, and is soon frustrated by Hiromi's nagging about his pushing strength that he pushes it so hard causing the car to roll off uncontrollably downhill with the both of them clinging on either sides, breaking the nearby minshuku inn's signboard in the process, before finally coming to an abrupt stop before the tide at the shore. The impact throws them into the water. Hiromi is amused but Kaito reacts irritated for ending up all drenched. The inn keeper Masaru and his granddaughter Makoto watch on, lost for words.

Both of them then take the inn's baths without the inn keeper's knowing. When asked by Makoto how long they wish to stay, Hiromi tells Makato that he intends to become an employee there while Kaito insists under Makoto's prompting that he is a customer, unlike Hiromi. Just when he reaches for his wallet to pay, he realizes his wallet is missing. After a fruitless search, he knows quite certainly it had fallen into the water when he was thrown off the car.

Without money to pay for a room, he is told to stay in the vacant employee's room with Hiromi, whose over active and talkative character annoys him greatly.
The next morning, the guys are woken by loud music from the kitchen's radio, where an early Hiromi prepares breakfast. To their surprise, it tastes real good as Hiromi has always been the cook at his girlfriend's apartment, though they, especially Kaito, aren't impressed when they find out he has been freeloading on his girlfriend without a job all this while.

That night, both of the guys are asked to dine at bar tended by the pretty lady boss, Haruko just up the road. Kaito leaves promptly after he finishes eating while the rest stay on with a group of gangly looking customers who pay with money from a wallet they picked at the shore only earlier. When the man holding the wallet accidentally drops Kaito's identity card, Hiromi helps him pick up and meanwhilst, sees Kaito's picture on it. The gangly customers quickly slips off, with Hiromi, Haruko, and Makoto chasing fast behind afterwards. After a hilarious struggle and wrestle with the guys, Hiromi manages to recover Kaito's wallet.

Kaito expresses gratitude to Hiromi with reserve back at his room. A letter comes next day, addressed to Masaru from Makoto's mother, Keiko, who wishes for Makoto to move to the city to live with her. Makoto however, refuses when Masaru breaks this message to her. Shortly, Masaru tells Hiromi and Kaito to leave, saying he is closing down the inn for good. After Masaru's much insistence, both of them pack up and leave for the train station. Midway, they wave widely at the road to Makoto watching from her classroom's window. Unaware of their sudden departure, she waves back smiling as her classmates close around her to watch.

Kaito bids Hiromi farewell at the train station. Back at the inn, Makoto is surprised to hear about the guys' departure and Masaru's plan to close down the inn. At the usual restaurant, Kaito is asked by Sakura about his plan for the rest of his vacation. Kaito has not quite made up his mind what to do, but as he peers through the high glass to the far ocean against the horizon, he feels he isn't ready yet to leave the peaceful beach. On the train ride back to the beach, he looks out the train window and sees the back of Hiromi looking towards the sea, with his car along the highway, which Kaito presumes to have broken down again.

As a moody Makoto stands at the shore staring at the sea, the familiar voices of Hiromi and Kaito draw near, and they once again emerge in the same manner as their first meeting, clinging onto the either sides of the car rolling down the slope splashing into the water eventually. Towards the episode's end, Makoto narrates that all children who are born in the wonderful season of summer, are fortunate and happy.
